very quickly... Some of you have been worried because it's been a while since I've posted.
Here's a quick update: I am indeed alive and well. I have been working on the novels and a horror screenplay. Also, I will be attending the San Diego Comic Con after all.
I will make a proper post later with the dates you can find me at the SLG booth and more info about the projects I'm working on.
Have to run... bye for now!

I am investigative. You know that "Girls who like comics and geeks" Comic-Con MySpace gallery thing? Well, it's a yucky travesty committed by people who have nothing to do with Comic-Con International, who run the show, I got the word from David Glanzer, Comic-Con's PR Director, by email and in the comment you can read here. Here is an exerpt: Your instincts were right. Fae and myself were completely unaware of the posting on the myspace page. In fact, we were unaware we had a myspace page.
Needless to say it isn't official and we're working to remedy that situation immediately.
For anyone who knows me (and Dan knows me better than most) I can promise you this is something I would NEVER have approved.
I am amazingly proud of the fact that we all here at Comic-Con strive to make the show not only an educational and fun event, but really work hard to make sure the event is both safe and comfortable.
The thought that those images were posted and credited to us as official has me .. well, pretty darned angry.
Again, we're addressing this issue right now and I hope to have a resolution to this situation ASAP.
My sincerest apologies to anyone who thought we would condone such a posting and it makes me sad to think that someone would do such a thing in our name.
SLG for a long time produced the Comic-Con updates and souvenir books. From the contact I've had with Fae Desmond and David, after the haze of of "WHA-WHA-WHAT?" wore off, I knew that this couldn't be something they were involved in. In fact, this is a good opportunity to give them some props: Comic-Con goes on every year, and most people aren't even aware of the people behind it. Well, they're the people who make it happen -- professional miracle workers, as far as I'm concerned. If only they could perform the miracle of banishing fanboy sexism into the ground where it belongs. But that's something all of us in comics who want our industry to be taken seriously and be a friendly place for women must work on. |

Every day is silent and gray. This is the coastal town that they forgot to close down. Actually, aside from a bar and one restaurant, Mendocino closes down at nine p.m. promptly. Weekend vacationers, like Brian and I last weekend, wander through the foggy streets at night. Mendocino is the Innsmouth of California, transformed from the desolate center of pagan worship into a tourist town. The progeny of the Deep Ones have taken the form of aging hippies. They tell you that the building that now houses the bank was once the Freemason Hall, but we all know that they're a front for The Esoteric Order of Dagon. This building has a statue atop it of a winged figure with a scythe behind a kneeling woman who seems to be mixing some kind of malevolent brew. Brian and I found the grave of the man who fashioned this statue, one Erick Jense Albertson: After a walk through the uneven streets, past weather-beaten wooden fences and houses, then the cliffs, with their scrubby plants, gray-green, with pods hanging from them, you come to the seaside, which is rocky and rough, with tide pools that hold what very well could be the nursery of frog-fish people.
And then there were the bumble bees. They were everywhere, and I had the unique experience of being attacked by bumble bees when we came across their nest, a series of burrows in the fine sand. Bumble bees attack by bumbling around you, fuzzy and black and yellow and adorable. They seem to drink seawater.

Boys Who Like Comics Comic-Con Someone pretending to be Comic-Con has posted a gallery on their MySpace page called "Girls who like Comics and Geeks," featuring everything from Beerfest-promoting booth models to women wearing exhibitor badges who are quite obviously working. When you attend Comic-Con, the agreement on your badge gives them the right to use your image for promotional purposes however they wish, you know. And this is how they wish. [UPDATE: Nope, it's not how they wish! See the comment by Comic-Con's PR Director David Glanzer -- the Comic-Con page is not offificial and something he and Fae did not know about. Thanks, David! I was pretty sure Fae and David would never approve such a think.] I have a feeling it was a couple of employees at Comic-Con who did this, and those at the top like Fae Desmond and David Glanzer, who amaze me by managing to pull off such a huge even every year, weren't in on it. I'm not going to get outraged about it before I hear back from David, whom I emailed to ask about it. Meanwhile, in the spirit of good fun, I present to you: |

ME. In comic book world news of me, Neil Gaiman said I seemed "utterly self-assured and said lots of sensible things" and my new PW column made an Above the Fold link on Journalista! I'm working on a story for a new comics anthology. Also, I will be on a panel called "How Not to Break Into Comics" at Comic-Con. In other news of me... nothing. Writing is slow and solitary, as usual, and I keep an anxious eye out for agent replies. |

The most insulting thing I've seen all week An update from San Diego Comic Con International's new MySpace page. Thanks, guys (I'm assuming you're all guys over there). Very classy. I'm sure Girl in Magenta, Goth Girls, Beerfest Ladies, and of course Young Lady at booth (Nice Red and Black Striped Dress) are all feeling really proud to be included. You know, all those GIRLS WHO LIKE COMICS... AND GEEKS. You are not ready for the world at large. Current Mood: ... |

mario bandini... just finished redo-ing "the secret origin of mario bandini" again for the upcoming "blunderbuss" graphic novel. this is the forth time i've drawn this 8 page story. it's pretty cool to see the changes in style over the years. i'm posting the last 3 versions of the first page.(i'm not including the first attempt because it was a one pager [and i can't find it] ). as always click on the images to see em' bigger. this is the newest version, number 4. it's kinda a mix of the last two styles (last week).
version 3: this was done around the time of babysitter issue 2 insanity (maybe 2001).
this one is the second version done around the time of fetus issue one (1998) a simpler time.-a |

Wednesday July 2nd meeting Anyone want to meet up this Wednesday July 2nd at the usual place and time (around 6pm at the Salt Lake Roasting Company located at the intersection of 300E and 400S)?
Please leave a comment whether you can attend or not. There hasn't been much going on here lately and I'd like to see how many of you are actually checking this.
Oh, and for those of you who've never come along: We meet for anything from an hour to a few hours, depending on the turnout. We usually discuss comics, often bringing what we've been reading lately. Sometimes people will bring sketchbooks and show what they've been scribbling, sometimes doing some drawing during the meetings. But this is by no means a group strictly for people who draw comics (I myself don't draw).

Buttons, cont'd Jill just sent me the latest update on the button situation. I designed a few new buttons, and they're going to be sold in a cute little set, starting at San Diego Comic Con. Check them out! The Kim button says BE MINE KIM PINE, and the Wallace button says DRUNK AND/OR GAY. Current work status: Evan the Intern has left us (tear). Hoping to finish pencils on the first chapter of vol 5 this week. That is going pretty well. We're listening to Twilight in audiobook format. It was really exciting at first and now we're in the middle and it feels kind of like fanfiction but I expect it to get exciting again later. Millions of readers can't be wrong. EDIT: Okay, guys, I was being facetious about millions of readers not being wrong, so you can shut up about it now. |

I thought of this right before I fell asleep the other night/morning. Notes: I saw Jeffrey Lewis play the other night, and he was good as usual, even in the hostile environment of Williamsburg. (The audience was predictably ridiculous, as they couldn't stop talking throughout every song, every set, rudest people ever) I traded comics with him after the show, he makes some really good comics too, they're called Fuff! I don't know what that means. I went to PS1 today to see the olafur eliasson exhibit before it closed and was thoroughly impressed. his work is very spatial, and he had a large assortment of study models which were very cool, I feel like his work describes infinity. The MOMA half of the show was good as well. If you have read about those waterfalls in new york, by him, they are pretty disappointing. I like the idea, but they were not executed with nearly enough craft to make them look like anything but a stack of scaffolding raining mist. Work AC's Public Farm 1 is definitely worth seeing, I like it a lot better than last year's Young Architects winners. I saw wanted, you should too. There was a preview for Death Race, which I really really really wish was titled Transporter 3. The diablo 3 announcement was pretty exciting. Current Mood: awake |

Michael Turner passes away I just found out that comic book creator Michael Turner passed away last night. There is more info about it here: www.newsarama.com/comics/080628-Turner.htmlI didn't really know him. I think I've only ever met him in passing at comic book conventions, but he was a good friend to my pal Marc. Through second hand accounts, I've followed Michael's career since before he was ever published. Many years ago, my friend Marc had started taking kung-fu lessons at a martial arts studio in San Diego. One of the instructors was Michael Turner. The two quckly became friends, bonding over their interest in comics. I remember Marc telling me one day about his instructor, "Mr. Turner" he called him, (as students were supposed to refer to instructors) and how he'd brought some comic book samples in. He asked Marc's opinion as a fellow artist, and since Marc was already a published creator. Marc said the art samples were amazing. Michael said he was thinking of showing his art to TOP COW, and Marc told him that they would totally love his work. Soon afterward, Michael Turner was picked up by TOP COW and almost overnight he became a comic book sensation. He was a fan favorite, regularly listed in Wizard's Top Ten artists. Eventually, Michael went on to form his own comics imprint, ASPEN, and what I recall most about the ASPEN booth is the horde of fans waiting for his autograph. That, and of course Michael's dynamic art looming larger than life over the convention halls. Yet no matter how big a superstar he became. With his lines of fans, his booming comic book company and his major projects... he always had a moment for my friend Marc and his family. Eventually, the two would share another bond. Both struggling with their own battles against cancer. Despite their health issues, they continued to inspire each other. Marc, inspiring Michael as his health deteriorated yet struggled to persevere... and Michael inspiring Marc with his continued success despite the setbacks the disease forced him to endure. When Marc was in the hospice, during his final days, we knew that Michael would want to know what was going on. Neither Marc's family or I had any contact info so we asked our friend Jeromy, a former IMAGE colorist if he know of a way to get in touch. Jeromy didn't have any contact info but said he'd see what he could do. Minutes later, we got a call back. I don't know how Jeromy did it. He just did his Jeromy magic, for which we are forever grateful. Marc's family was put in touch with Michael. He was very glad that we sought to get in touch with him and tell him about Marc. He expressed his condolences to the family and as I recall, it was very difficult for him to talk about it. He was utterly devestated. Now, hearing that Michael has passed away, well... it's just so sad. I never really knew Michael Turner. But I've always had a very deep respect for him. For his continued friendship with Marc and the Brueland family and for his fantastic talents. I'll miss seeing him around at the conventions. He was truly one of the good guys and deserved every ounce of his success. |

(Text copied and pasted from my art blog, sorry about that, its all for the sake of context!) When I was in college I visited mangaworkshop.net pretty frequently, and over the years I've become a mod there, trying to help out kids with their art and whatnot. I am not so active in that community anymore but from time to time I try to stay on top of things. Anyways to the point, one of the activities they tend to do over there is a Collaborative Manga. What it is its one artist starts drawing a story (lets say 3 pages) and the next artist picks off where the last guy left off, does the next few pages and so on and so forth, giving you a pretty interesting mix of art, stories, plot twists and general nonsense. They have reached their fourth iteration of this activity and I decided I should help them out with the first few pages, I don't know how many I'll do but for me is a good experiment to see how much I can get done in a limited time frame. Page one is finished and it took about 3 hours total. |

This is weird Someone made a video of adorable Decepticons dancing to my cover of Born Slippy. It's just weird at first, but once the beat kicks in it gets kind of great. Also, I posted a new song on the Kupek myspace. I am having trouble with my mixes, so it's streaming-only at the moment. Hopefully I will get the whole album together in the next few weeks and put it online. Thirdly, I highly recommend that you go and see WANTED this weekend. James McAvoy is excellent, Angelina Jolie is attractive, action sequences are insanely great. It is good stuff. |

New "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now" I used my convalescence at home (food poisoning!) to wear pajamas with poodles on them all day and finally get the third installment of "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now" -- a series of short comics about working in comics by myself and Brian Belew -- up at Blog@Newsarama. This one, "Hero Worship: is about the poise our heroine maintains when she has the once-only opportunity to make a first impression on one of her idols, Neil Gaiman. Enjoy. |

Damn.
Our Harvey nomination got retracted due to a clerical error. Evidently, we weren't even eligible to be nominated because of when our blog started. And there was a book released last year with a similar title to our site...so things got confused.

Buttons from Jill San Diego Comic-Con is no more than four weeks away. There's a bunch of promo stuff I'll be telling you about between now and then. This here is a rough batch of buttons. There's a new Scott and a new Ramona, and the others in that pile are old designs, most of which are getting cycled out. If any of you have the old Kim Pine or Scottaholic buttons, treasure them, because I'm not making any more! Ha ha ha ha ha! However, there will be NEW buttons - a new Kim Pine design and a new Wallace, both using completely brand-new artwork. I'll show them to you soon. Thanks to Jill Beaton for taking the initiative to put the buttons together. Jill is a beloved Oni Press editor. |
